ABOUT
ANIMAL
BEHAVIOUR
AUSTRALIA

We help people to understand their pet and how to solve or prevent behaviour problems often in just one hour.
As a trained Animal Behaviourist we've worked with 100’s and 100’s of pet owners across the UK, Australia and worldwide. Like Dr. Harry, I am a trained professional.
Animal Behaviour Australia has been developed to drive a mission: To change the way that people ‘talk’ to their pet.
Pet owners in Australia face three main issues when it comes to dealing with negative pet behaviour in their pet:
-
Lack understanding: Most people don’t understand the root cause behind their pet’s negative behaviour.
-
Lack direction: They lack a proven humane method of fixing problems.
-
Give up or look in the wrong places: They either put up with problems unnecessarily or give up on their pet. They may try to fix problems by wasting money and time on so-called gurus or expensive dog training.
Because of this Animal Behaviour Australia has developed and built an online consultation service and training platform accessible right across Australia to teach you to understand and communicate with your pet.
We:
-
Provide the understanding: We teach you why your pet does what it does and how to talk to them – we bridge the communication barrier.
-
Provide direction: We spend time with you and your pet and show you how to overcome annoying behaviours.
-
Provide qualified help in solving problems: As qualified Animal Behaviourists we help you to understand the root cause and then how to solve, fix and prevent behaviour problems.
We know you love your pet but sometimes they are a little misunderstood so we teach you with a proven online program to enable you to get back on track or to prevent problems before they arise.
Opportunity: Learn the strategies required to enable you to shape the behaviour of your specific pet!
We are offering you the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a qualified Pet Psychologist in your own home, at a time convenient to you, no matter where you live in Australia. We will assess your pet and your unique situation via video-call. This means we can assess your pets true behaviour as they do not not that we are watching them. This proven method allows us to get to the bottom of the root cause quickly, enabling us to design a tailor made solution and plan for you to work from.
MY STORY
Dionna Newton, Animal Psychologist, and founder of Animal Behaviour Australia explains her story of how she came to create Animal Behaviour Australia.
ABOUT
ME

My name is Dionna, I am a Pet Psychologist. I help people to understand their pet and to solve and prevent behaviour problems.
I am an experienced and qualified Animal Behaviourist.
As an Animal Behaviourist I am not a dog trainer or a vet. I am an animal psychologist. My value is that I look at what is motivating and driving your pet to perform the behaviour it is and then advise how to re-direct unwanted behaviour to an alternative suitable behaviour which is acceptable to both you and your pet. I work with Pet Owners to find solutions to their pet's behavioural problems, but I also provide preventative consultations to enable owners to avoid problem behaviour from the start. More on both of these are covered within our services here.
I am originally from the UK and have a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree. My Honours project focused on animal behaviour. I started some training in Animal Psychology at university and then trained specifically on Pet Animal Psychology through the Centre of Applied Pet Ethology (COAPE) – a training college which specifically teaches Pet Animal Behaviour.
I use EMRA™ which is a practical, easy to use, yet powerful approach that assists me in identifying key emotional aspects of a problem behaviour and the factors reinforcing it, and defines how best to approach precise treatment.
I can design a Behaviour Modification Plan (BMP): a written report which details the nature of the problem and specifies instructions on how to help resolve them. BMPs are tailor-made to each case and are designed with the owner to ensure it is practical and achievable.
No matter how big or small the problem, there is a solution for it.

MY MISSION
Dionna Newton, Animal Psychologist, explains why she is so passionate about helping animals and why she had to make it her mission in life to create Animal Behaviour Australia!
Her Mission: "To help all pets in need of help Australia wide".
HOW CAN WE HELP YOU?
At Animal Behaviour Australia we are committed to rectifying the cause of your pet’s behaviour problem so that you have a problem free pet. Dealing with symptoms alone does not rectify the underlying cause or address motivating factors resulting in your pet’s behaviour. We advise that you seek help to address the cause and symptoms by booking a Behaviour Consultation for your pet with our Animal Behaviourist. A targeted treatment plan will be provided for your particular pet and situation. Each pet and situation is different, so each plan is different. A Behaviour Consultation does not cost as much as you would expect. Get help for your pet now. BOOK NOW!!

''Dionna was so approachable and made me feel very comfortable, as well as my puppy Hank. By the end of the session I felt prepared for the months ahead and had a much more positive outlook. Hank has thrived since our visit and I put it down to the confidence I found through our session with Dionna.''

FAQs

-
My pets behaviour is so out of control I doubt anyone can help! Do you really think you can?Yes! I'm passionate about helping you get the best relationship with your pet and I use honed techniques to get as much out of you and your pet as possible in our time together. This helps me get to underlying problems and equip you on how to change the behaviour yourself - and have fun doing it! Find out how.
-
What is the difference between an Animal Behaviourist, a Dog Trainer or Veterinary Behaviourist?"To avoid confusion, the latter are vets first, behaviourists second, whereas I am a behaviourist first and foremost. Trainers tend to offer broad training advice and help you to train your pet in obedience. Whereas I specialise in psychology and look at the driver and reinforcement behind your individual pets behaviour and work primarily with the owner. As I am not a vet I cannot prescribe medication, however I do have training in behavioural pharmacology and neuroscience and will happily work with your vet if we feel medication may be beneficial in assisting us. Download a Vet Referral Form from the Services page.
-
Video calls wont be as effective as you seeing me and my pet in person?I have actually found that video calls work much better...It also allows me to see you, your pet and the home set up in case this is important to the case. The process we follow allows me to gain detailed information from you prior to the consultation. By completing a questionnaire it allows me to 'see' your situation and what the problem is, and in addition, if relevant, you can upload videos of problematic behaviour. Your pet is unlikely to display this on the day of a physical consultation. You can get access to a behaviourist no matter where you live at a time that is convenient to you.
-
What if I struggle to implement the changes you recommend? You can book a follow-up consultation here where we can go over the the advice given and discuss the issues you are having. I'll help you understand what's holding you both back and advise the best course of action. You're not alone!
-
Which consultation type should I select?A preventative consultation is for pets with no existing behavioural problems. The questionnaire you need to complete is very different from the one you complete for behaviour issues. No video upload is required and no BMP is required. You will get given advice and information to help you to avoid problem behaviours: "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". A modification consultation will address unwanted behaviour and is a more complex process. More details on both here. If you are still not sure which to select then please book the free 10 minute pre-appointment to discuss.
-
Do I need the Behaviour Modification Plan (BMP)?That is entirely your decision. You can take your own written notes throughout the consultation and the advice given will tell you everything you need to do. The BMP is designed with you during your consultation and is specific to you, your lifestyle and your pet. No BMP is the same. During the consultation you will get an understanding of why the problem has established and learn strategies to change the unwanted behaviour. Some of these strategies can be quite subtle and a stepped process. A written BMP allows you to get step by step instructions to follow to ensure you are successful in changing the behaviour most efficiently and effectively. A BMP is not required for a preventative consultation; however the information you receive during this consultation will prevent you from running into many unforeseen problems.
-
How much is it?I offer a variety of consultations for preventing or modifying unwanted behaviour. Take a look at prices here.
-
My pet isn't a cat or dog - can you still help?Absolutely. My techniques work on other pets too - rabbits, birds and guinea pigs. I do not consult for horses however. Book a free 10 minute chat here if you're still not sure if I can help you.
